Why Can't Johnny Read? Because Deval Can't Do Math

The Boston Globe-Democrat reports on a new study showing the obvious--Massachusetts charter schools get better results than the typical government-run, union-dominated schools. But this study also finds that Gov. Patrick's pet education project, so-called "pilot schools," actually get worse results than the regular classroom.

Sealed with diss for democracy - Obama era begins prematurely

Watching Barack Obama delivering a campaign speech from behind his very own, new-and-improved presidential seal, all I can say is this:

I, for one, welcome our new liberal overlords.
Oh, come on, my fellow conservatives - don’t you read Newsweek? Aren’t you watching PBS? Obama has a 15 percent lead, has flip-flopped on campaign spending and therefore is president in all but name only. Any day now, he’ll be spotted in D.C. with Deval Patrick, picking out new White House drapes.

So we all might as well get with the mainstream media program and bow to the new regime of hope, change and insufferable arrogance - no, wait! I meant “American greatness!”

Please don’t hurt me, presumptive President Obama.

I’m not one of the people complaining that having your own presidential seal at this point is a bit arrogant. It’s that traitor to the new regime, Mickey Kaus over at Slate.com:

“If you wanted to emphasize to voters that the Democrats’ nominee is a bit stuck up, it would be hard to do better. I suppose he could start requiring reporters to stand when he enters the room.”

I, for one, like the New Seal of the Obama-dency. It’s so much more hip and avant-garde than that old, patriotic thing. The shield of stars and stripes representing the USA? Gone. Replaced by the royal “O,” and an image of the rising sun, symbolizing, uh, imperial Japan, maybe? I’m not really sure.

And changing that tired old “E Pluribus Unum” was a masterstroke. On the Obama seal, the motto is “Vero Possumus,” which loosely translates to either “Yes, We Can” or “Let Them Eat Possum” (an appeal to disaffected voters in West Virginia).

cw-4Regardless, millions of Obamaniacs are ready for Barack to be president, and they want it right now. They don’t see the point of all this “will of the people” nonsense. “Why do we have to listen to the stupid Constitution, anyway?” they wonder. “Why can’t we do what we want?”

In Massachusetts, we call these people “legislators.”

But I, for one, am hopeful that Obama will at least go through the motions of an election before he seizes power and institutes a new regime of lower tides, healed souls and 53 percent federal marginal tax rates.

It’s a small thing, I know, but we, the people, like feeling involved. Perhaps Obama could humor us a bit.

At the moment, alas, Our Dear Leader doesn’t seem so inclined. He’s abandoned the public (as in “you and me”) campaign system - which he once praised as vital to good democracy - in favor of taking as much money from everyone he can, and trusting himself to remain incorruptible.

He’s declined thus far, to appear in any town hall venues with John McCain, where the two “candidates” (wink, wink) would take questions from the masses.

And, in what is truly a first, Obama has all but declared every vote against him morally illegitimate.

“We know what kind of campaign they’re going to run,” he said of the GOP. “They’re going to try to make you afraid of me. ‘He’s young and inexperienced and he’s got a funny name. And did I mention he’s black?’ ”

That’s right - nobody would even know Obama was African-American if it weren’t for those dirty Republicans.

Some might consider it arrogant to declare the motives of millions of American voters suspect. Not being as smart as Barack, some of these voters think they’re casting votes based on issues and experience.

But I, for one, don’t care. Obama has declared dissent unacceptable, and I say “Get with the program! Vero Possumus! Si Se Puede! Resistance is futile!”

The deal has been sealed.

MARGERY'S BOSTON HERALD ON DEMAND
Leave the Travoltas alone

With so many innuendos woven throughout coverage of John Travolta’s son’s death, you might think John Travolta killed the teen himself.

He and his wife neglected the teenage boy.

That’s one clear underlying theme here, which is why Travolta’s attorneys have combated suggestions by Bahamian police that 16-year-old Jett’s body lay dying and undiscovered for hours in their vacation home.

The couple refused to treat Jett properly because Scientologists don’t acknowledge mental illness.

That’s the second big theme.

Some advocates for autistic children have claimed that the Travoltas knowingly denied their son’s supposed autism because admitting it would mean psychiatrists and psychiatric drugs, something Scientology forbids.

It’s incredible, really, how many who know so little are nonetheless diagnosing Jett Travolta’s supposed illness, prescribing the correct treatment for that illness, and judging his devastated parents’ alleged failings.

This sort of thing is not particularly new. We judge victims of horror and disaster all the time. We do it, the theory goes, to separate ourselves from such horror, to reassure ourselves that as long as we’re more careful than those victims, we’re safe. It won’t happen to us. You know: If she weren’t walking at night, the car wouldn’t have mowed her down.

But judging celebrity victims adds a whole new layer of entitlement. The Travoltas become like cardboard pinatas, held up to bash.

Add to that the Internet factor - that is, the anonymous and often vicious comments posted on news stories and blogs covering the case - and what you have is a nauseating, venomous stew.

‘I’m sure the (autopsy) results will be whatever the Travoltas say they want them to be. Just like their self-diagnosis of what his illness was.’

‘I am a nurse . . . My theory is that he had a seizure disorder that was never treated due to their religious beliefs, and over time caused brain damage . . . It is very difficult to believe that people would not seek proven medical treatment based on their religious beliefs, especially for children, but it happens all the time.

These were among the milder postings I saw yesterday. True, the first accused the Travoltas of cheating on the autopsy; the second, again, blamed the parents for Jett’s death. But at least these weren’t dripping with rage.

The theory on all this? That commenters are just venting, saying anonymously what they’d not dare in polite company. But to me, it’s just creepy, and vile.
